The one where I give lippy a go (for the first time in 15 years)!

In case you missed it, I love clothes (and shoes), fashion is my thing, but I am a relative newcomer when it comes to beauty! Sure I can do a pretty good smokey eye when I need to, but I’m not a beauty product fiend and give me a lipstick and I really have no idea what to do (and I think it looks crap on me all the time!) Now I also know that there are a lot of you out there that are in the same boat (ABH you are not one of them so maybe you can give us all a lesson one day!) so I thought that as I branch out and adventure into the world of beauty products, I would take you along for the ride…. hold on!!

Outside my beauty box day 1. Coloured lipstick.

Off I headed to the lovely girls at the M.A.C counter at MYER Brisbane (thanks Michelle – you were awesome, and this is not a sponsored post by the way). “I would like to try some colour on my lips please”. Michelle pulled out three colours for me, all waaaaay out of my ‘clear lip gloss only’ comfort zone! Here are the three colours I tried (I didn’t take a pic of them ON me because a) the lighting in that place is scary and b) my hair wasn’t done ok!? I wish I had now because the pics don’t do them justice, the red was REALLY red and the coral was much brighter, but you get the idea)…..

Playing with colours

So the verdict was in, Vega Volt (the coral one) was the winner (although it still took me a good hour walking around to get used to it, the whole time thinking “are poeple looking at my lips and wondering if I have forgotten to look in the mirror this morning!?”)

However, being the pov full time uni student that I am, $36 was quite a lot to spend on a lippy, so off to Priceline to see if I could match the colour, for half the price. Can I just say though, the girls at M.A.C we SOOOOOO incredibly lovely and when I am rich enough (ie working full time) I will definitely be going to see them for any new makeup needs I have!!

So what did I find?

Models Prefer lipstick in 'After Party' $9.99 and Models Prefer lipliner in 'Nearly Nude' RRP $699 both from Priceline

The colour that I found that was the most similar (although I know it doesn’t really look like it in the pictures – but they are both a coral kinda colour) was called “After Party” from a brand called Models Prefer – it was super-affordable ($9.99 people!) so I thought I would try it.

The other purchase I made was a nude lip liner – now as previously mentioned, I’m not a lippy kinda girl, so I didn’t even have a lip liner, in fact I don’t think I have EVER had a lip liner, and the lovely Michelle from M.A.C did tell me that one is essential when when wearing lippy so I ‘invested’ in that too. Here is the final result……

Mwah! It's growing on me....

Do you like? I think I do….. So that was my first foray into exploring beauty as well as fashion!

Do you have any other beauty trends or tricks you are not sure of and I will investigate for the both of us!!

Short and sweet

I was cleaning out some old boxes at mum and dad’s the other day (don’t we all LOOOOOVE doing that!) and I found a list of sayings that my girlfriends and I had all sent to each other in high school. It was part of a ‘things we love’ thingy (kinda like a warm fuzzy – do you do those in primary school? and no honey, that is not when you fart in bed….).

Well anyway, it got me thinking about some of the sayings and quotes that make me smile every time, so here are just a few of my favs (note: most have something to do with shoes, surprising?)

And an oldie but a goodie

Do you have any quotes or sayings that you love?

Home grown designer profile: Sarah from Saralli Designs

Sarah Williams

Australia is breeding a new brand of fashion designer, a designer that lives, breathes and most importantly embodies the label they create. One of those amazing new designers is former Brisbane (but now Sydney) girl, Sarah Williams – designer and creator of Saralli Designs.

Sarah sat down with Chasing Cait recently to share all the ins and outs of designing your own jewellery label. Here is what she had to say:

Chasing Cait: When did you establish your label and why?

Sarah: Saralli was established late 2008 with my room mate at the time. We started it because I had always wanted to have my own label, and I personally had to get my mind off the death of my father late 2008, so Saralli was born in his memory. He was an amazing artist and creative and I wanted to carry out our creative family legacy, as well as fulfill my dreams.
Who is the Saralli girl?

She’s a girl with many personalities/personas/alter-ego’ – she dresses the way she feels like the true chameleon she is – she can wear doc martens and studded cuff to a rock concert, flowers to a family BBQ, a sequinned turbans on a night on the town – and everything in between. She doesn’t follow the masses, she has her own unique style and loves that she looks different to her friends, because she is confident in her own skin.

What is your favourite piece from your collection and why?

This is really hard! There have been a few one-off things I have kept for myself over the years because I just loved them so much and they had to be mine! everything I design comes from within me, and its always created because I love it, so it’s hard to just pick one! but my favourite at the moment are the over-shirts/capes….they are so versatile, I try to wear a different one everyday because they are just so easy but still look really good without trying too hard! They are great for any shaped body and I always feel comfortable in my skin (fat days or not) when I wear one!

Where are you stocked?

Currently Saralli is stocked  at Little Lace in Brisbane City, Jorj Clothing at Stones Corner and we have just picked up a new stockist – Dr. & Devo in ACT! pretty cool they sought us out and loved our items! and of course, stocked online at www.saralli.com.au

I know you are embarking on a new adventure in Sydney, is this for your label?

Ah Sydney! well, no actually, my partner just got moved for work so off we went! So I of course, saw this as an amazing opportunity to obviously get more serious about the label too and to take it to the next level.

Where do you see the Saralli in 5 years time?

Hard to say, technology changes so often and I’m constantly re-thinking this question because of the way people are changing how they consume. I’m now thinking less of actual retail space for Saralli, and more of an epic online experience, covering a much wider range of accessories and clothing for Australian women. I hope Saralli turns into a bit of a one-stop shop for unique Australian fashion and can be comparable to the successes of our competitor giants like ASOS. Gotta dream big right?!
Oh, and I see the business itself in a huge white office/warehouse/production space with a small, talented team of Saralli girls who just make it happen. and I, of course, will be travelling the world finding inspiration to bring back to our consumers.

Saralli Birds of Paradise earrings $49.95

Which celeb would you love to see wearing Saralli?

Well, I draw a lot of my inspiration from strong, powerful female musicians…so anyone along the lines of pop goddesses like  Gaga, Beyonce, Rihanna, Katy Perry, right down to my indie favourites like Bjork, Robyn, Peaches, Roisin Murphy etc… all amazing in their own ways.

Who is your style icon and why?

I swear this probably changes for me on a weekly basis, I put on many different hats in my life,  but perhaps Lady Gaga right now. I mean, she gets alot of things wrong, and yes, shes a bit kookoo, and i don’t necessarily like her music…. BUT, I love her because she always takes everything to the next level, she takes her brand very seriously, loves making a statement and commits to her looks 100%. She has fun with fashion, which is what its meant to be, and often alot of people get caught up in the serious side of the fashion word, where there is a lot of competition, negativity and difficulties, but at the end of the day – it’s fashion, it”s a fun way in which everyone can interpret themselves on the daily. It should be FUN!

How would you describe YOUR own style?

My own style is exactly what my label is about, which is being a chameleon. Some days I wake up, and I think…I don’t want to wear shoes to the shop, and I throw on a maxi dress and don’t brush my hair. Other days, I want to wear all black and put my hair in a tight bun. Getting ready for work takes all of 10 minutes most days. When I go out, I want to be a brightly coloured butterfly and take time to put on lots of make up and do my hair in curls, and to leave my glasses at home. When I’m bumming around at home, I’m in the ugliest oldest clothes I can find. But hey! thats me, and i’m not really sure what you call it, its not really a distinct style, so I guess if I’m like that, there has got to be more like me, so Saralli really caters for this. Im big about experimenting with accessories and working with your basic wardrobe, which is what I do and think its the way of the future!

What was your biggest fashion fail?

I hate reliving this moment in my life! but its definitely when I went to my friends formal in 2003. Picture this – an entirely rouched cobalt blue vintage dress (boob tube), a hot pink silk sash worn as a low hip belt (when wearing those was sooooo cool) with my dark hair in tight ringlets and all pinned on top of my hair, pink hand made earrings and hot pink eyeshadow. back in the days before we knew to get spray tans and hair straighteners….oh the shame….

What is your best fashion tip to the everyday girl out there?

I would say is to invest in fashion pieces that you are in love with. For years I shopped purely by price point, and I regret it all now. I end up with cheap, on trend, mass produced, ill fitting clothes that I don’t have a connection with, nor do I feel any different when I wear them.
It’s the thing you buy when you feel like you are the best version of yourself, and you OWN that look – whether its a bold statement necklace that you saved for for months, a colourful cape you connected with and bought at the markets which makes you feel like a floating butterfly and lifts your mood, or a really amazing pair of heels that are so comfortable on, and yes, might be from a reputable shoe designer and aren’t the cheaper knock-off versions, but will be an investment in years to come.
And of course, to just be yourself. I gave up trying to look cool for people and pretending to like certain trends just because everyone else was doing it. Its the girls that separate themselves from the pack and do things for themselves that lead the most for-filling lives.

The final ten percent – Accessories

Coco Chanel famously once said, “Before you leave the house, look at yourself in the mirror and take one thing off.” Well no offense Ms Chanel, but I disagree (gasp!).  Far be it from me to challenge THE first lady of fashion…..but I’m going to anyway. For me, accessories are a great way to showcase your personal style without breaking the bank. And the MORE the merrier.

Now of course if you are wearing a Chanel suit I completely understand that you don’t need to kill it with accessories, it’s a CHANEL suit for goodness sake, but hands up who has one sitting in their wardrobe (Kim R, put your hand down, we know you do but the rest of us don’t OK?). Most of us are just trying to get through life looking stylish in our chain store chic (plus a few designer pieces here and there that we bought on sale) so we need to do something a little bit special to make us stand out from the crowd.

Enter accessories. Now as you many have heard I am a shoe girl (did someone say Imelda?) but my costume jewellery collection is rapidly growing (much to the boys horror – “but where is it all going to fit!”). I can’t believe I didn’t work this out years ago – accessories are the key to individual style. Here are a few easy ways to pump up your every day (and night) look without having to fork out for a new outfit.

Still my fav shoes of the season (that I can afford, Louboutins don't count). Tony Bianco 'Coventry' heels. $159.95

SHOES.

I. LOVE. SHOES. So much so that I have three pairs still sitting in their boxes unworn that I just HAD to have (I will wear them eventually, I promise). If you have quite a simple or classic outfit on, add a fun shoes to jazz it up a little (yes, I said ‘jazz it up’). Animal print is big this season, and again, my favs from Tony Bianco (I am desperately waiting for them to go on sale!) are a great example. If heels aren’t your thing, there are plenty of animal print ballet flats around at the moment too and if you don’t do animal print (I totally get that) any shoe that is a little different will do the job. It’s just about making the SHOE the “statement piece” of your outfit, rather than the outfit itself.

On the note of heels vs flats, the sad truth is that generally with a knee-length hemline a slight heel makes our leg look a little better (unless you have legs like Giselle, and even Giselle probably doesn’t have legs like Giselle). The good news is that a wedge will generally give you the same effect but with much less pain! There are a HEAP of wedges around at the moment and looking at the mags out of the US and Europe, they will still be huge for summer so there is hope for us all!

LUST HAVE for next Summer. Tory Burch wedges on Shopbop.com for only $121 AUS

SCARVES.

Summer or winter you can use a scarf to add a bit of excitement to any outfit. The bigger and warmer the better in winter – cashmere, wool, even faux fur. Wrap them around your neck for extra warmth and again use as a pop of colour with a black or grey outfit (which we all gravitate towards in the cooler months).

In summer, silk and imitation silk (read: polyester blends) are a great way to add a little extra without boiling to death. Hang loosely around your neck, or tie like a 1960′s air hostess or even twist it up tightly and wrap it around your wrist like a bangle. You can also use a lightweight scarf as a hat band on your summer fedora or tie it to your handbag to individualise your look. Scarves are one of the most versatile accessories out there so don’t be scared to have a go at wearing them a few ways.

A few scarves

JEWELLERY.

This is the obvious way to add that final 10% to your look but don’t feel like you have to spend a fortune on jewellery! Stores like Diva, Lovisa and Collette are great options for picking up some fun, colourful jewellery at great prices. Don’t discount places like Target and Kmart for some cute stuff too.

My turquoise and burnt orange jewellery

The trick I have found to buying costume jewellery is that if you are going to buy something with a bit of colour, make sure you buy a few pieces in that colour that you can use all at once to tie an outfit together. I have quite a few pieces of turquoise-coloured costume jewellery that all work well together, especially if I am wearing a solid colour like black or grey. My other new favourite accessory colour is a deep coral, or burnt orange kind of colour. It works really well with the olive greens and greys and browns that are around at the moment. I have a great set of bangles that I bought at a little shop in Whangamata in New Zealand at Christmas time, then recently I picked up a cool flower ring from Lovisa for $4.95! These two pieces work really well with each other, but also work well mixed with the turquoise – don’t be afraid to mix your colours either!

Bigger is better (well I think so anyway) but that is a personal choice. I have fine features (and fingers) so I find that the bolder, chunkier styles of jewellery suit me better. There is a fine line though between accessorising with personality and just wearing too much (sorry to confuse you)! Generally I find if I am wearing big earrings, I will steer clear of a necklace (and visa versa), also, I will wear bangles on the opposite hand to any rings I am wearing. As with most things in fashion, it is about proportion and balance. Make sure your jewellery is spread evenly over your body and the colours and shapes compliment you and your style.

My blossoming jewellery collection - I'm getting there!

So there, my friends, are a few simple ways to add your own sense of style and personality, don’t be scared to step outside your comfort zone a little.

How do you add personality to your look? Are you a shoe girl or does something else float your boat?
