Trend to Try: The Great Gatsby

Every now and then a movie comes along that seems to jump off the cinema screen and into our wardrobes. Breakfast at Tiffany’s gave us the Little Black Dress, Carrie Bradshaw made it ok to wear tutus, and black bras under white tops (ok it’s a TV show but you know what I mean) and queen bi-atch Miranda Priestly told Anne Hathaway’s character Andy (and the rest of us) how a select few choose what the rest of us wear in The Devil Wears Prada (not to mention those knee high Chanel boots – dreamy!)

The lastest style-defining film hit our screens when Baz Lurman’s The Great Gatsby opened last week. One word. DAZZLING! I LOVED it! It was every bit as sparkling, intense and thought-provoking as I expected – there were even a few cool cameos from some famous faces!

But I digress – the fashion….. *sigh* it was divine – set in the glitz and glamour of 1920′s Long Island, the frocks had more dazzle than Channing Tatum’s smile and the suits, oh the suits! Sharper than Rosie O’Donnell’s tounge (and waaaaaay classier for that matter).

So the GOOD NEWS for us, is that we can all get a little bit of the Gatsby fashion in our own wardrobes too.

Why you NEED a pair of ponte pants

If you take ONE piece of advice from me this winter, this should be it – get yourself a pair of ponte (pon-tee) pants. They are AMAZING! Don’t like skinny jeans? Get some ponte pants. Like wearing pants that are comfortable and fashionable? Get some ponte pants. Don’t want to wear leggings as pants? Get some ponte pants.

ponte pants

So what are ponte pants? They are a cross between a legging and a skinny jean. They are made from ponte – a thick, double-knit fabric with two-way stretch. Two way stretch is important because it moulds to your body-shape and holds you in at the same time – genius.

So now we know what they are, here is why you need them:

Labels I Love: Gorman

OK, so I well and truly failed on my 7-day shoe challenge (I’m still working on the last 3 days….) in the mean time, here is another awesome post on another awesome label…….

_________________________________________________________

I might live in NZ but I am well and truly a proud Aussie so it’s awesome to see my fellow Australians flying our national flag over this side of the ditch. One of my fave Aussie labels is doing amazingly well in NZ and I just had to tell you guys all about it! Introducing GORMAN.

gorman

You may recognise the following frock from such blog posts as WIWT: Blue and Orange and Accessories Week: print + accessories. I may have worn in once or twice (or forty million times) this summer…..

Gorman summer 2012

Gorman summer 2012

I bought it on a whim (as you do) at the start of summer and I can safely say it has been my favourite dress of the season! Well it started my love affair with Gorman and I’m even more excited about the Winter collection that has just hit stores.

I’m totally pumped to tell you a little about their winter collection, you MUST go and buy yourself at least one piece, so here are just a few of my faves:

gormans dresse

1) Unique New York dress AUS $499 2) Love to Love you dress AUS $299

I almost died when I saw the Unique New York dress (let alone tried to say it out aloud – go on, give it a go – see? Not that easy!) I think it’s going to have to make it onto the top of the wish list for winter!

1) 2) 3)

1) Tiki Taka cords AUS $199 2) Tic Tak Toe cardi AUS $299 3) T-bar clog AUS $249

But wait, there’s more – a winter dress or two (just layer up with boots and tights) and a fabulous coat that will work perfectly over either frock – genius I know.

1) 2) 3)

1) Moroccan brocade dress AUS $329 2) Drop waist deco dress AUS $239 3) Golden Palm coat AUS $329

One of the reasons I’m loving Gorman for winter is the rich colour palette (that is NOT black!) the cobalt blue and that gorgeous mustard colour are great for the cooler months because they will look good with black (if you MUST wear it) but they are great for now, when it’s not so cold (famous last words right?!)

Fun colours, cool shapes, Aussie designed! What more can you ask for! Visit the Gorman online store for more details on the whole collection  or if you are in Auckland, visit their flagship store this side of the ditch; Gorman Newmarket, 5/25 Nuffield St.

In the mean time, be sure to keep your eye out for Gorman pieces in some future posts (I just have to get the new purchases past The Boy first, wish me luck!)

Autumn/Winter 2013 trends – and how to wear them

Can you feel the slight chill in the air? I can! (Gimme a break, I’m from Queensland OK? Anything under 20 degrees is cold!)

Even though the sun is still shining bright and warm during the day (here is Auckland anyway), Autumn is just around the corner (try finding a summer frock in any of the stores right now! I know right?).

So being the awesomely kind person that I am, I’ve done all the hard yards, trekked the miles and miles of shopping centre isles to search out all the latest looks for this coming Autumn/Winter – here are my picks!

1. Metallics + embellishment

This is my top trend for this Autumn/Winter – in fact I love it so much, I wrote a whole post on it last week! (Read it here)

A bit of bling will brighten up a chilly start to the day! Pick your poison – we have sequins, studs and glitter all on offer.

The trick is to find pieces that have the embellishment in the RIGHT places, steer clear of anything sparkling in the places you are trying to distract from, and aim for the bling to draw attention to your best body attributes!

Wearing your heart on your sleeve

Fashion is all about making statements.

It’s an awesome way to show a little (or a big) insight into your personality.

style

If you are feeling awesome, you wear bright colours, and fun clothes. If you are feeling not so awesome (which rarely happens right?) you might gravitate towards darker colours and more simple clothes.

What’s so fun about fashion, is that every now and then, you can LITERALLY wear your heart on your sleeve. I’m starting to see a few pieces around that can help you tell everyone else how you are feeling today! Here are a few of my faves….
