Body Shape Basics – petite

Ok, so maybe not one of the ‘standard’ body shapes but dressing for a petite body has its own set of do’s and don’ts…. plus I promised my sister-in-law that I would write this for you, so Kirsty, this is for you ;-)

If you are tiny in stature, then most of the rules for your body shape still apply (click here to work out which shape you are) but there are few extra tips and tricks that can make you feel 10 feet tall! (sorry, couldn’t help myself).

So what does exactly does ‘petite’ mean? Well to me it usually it means you are slightly lacking in the height department (5ft 3… 5ft 4 sound familiar?) and usually you are a size 4, 6 or 8 – BUT you can be quite petite in stature and a slightly larger size too…. the same rules apply.

Here are some familiar faces you might recognize that fall into the petite category!

The Olsen twins, Kylie Minogue and Kourtney Kardashian are all petite beauties – but there are still curves involved!

On trend vs classic style

I love me a good trend (did I mentioned I’m addicted to statement pants? Ad.Dic.Ted… remember this?). Peplums, neon and floral prints have also all made their way into my wardrobe already this Spring…. BUT there is also something to say for classic style. A well cut blazer, a pretty, girly frock and an amazing pair of heels are ALWAYS welcome in my style books and are often the first things I recommend my clients have in their wardrobe.

The age-old question….

Trend to try: Peplums

No it’s not type of fruit, a speech impediment or a style of Scottish dancing (these are some of the options I was offered when I asked around….)

A peplum is defined by The Fairchild’s Dictionary of Fashion as an extension of a bodice that comes below the waistline, sometimes pleated, sometimes flared…. now does that help? Thought not. In easy, everyday terms, a peplum is a slightly flared detail on a blouse or a dress. It kinda looks like a little mini skirt around your waist.

Riiiiiiiight, I hear you say. But wait! It is actually a really flattering trend…. I found this great little top at Glassons (can you tell it’s my new favourite shopping destination??). Normally I would stay clear of such a high neckline (not so flattering on a larger bust) but I think the streamline shape of the top (and the fact that I’m wearing it with the same colour pants), plus the accessories, is a really feminine and flattering shape.

Peplum top from Glassons, necklace from eBay and pants are vintage Trelise Cooper (always wear a slimline pant or skirt to balance out the width of a peplum – it’s all about defining your waist and giving you a girlie figure!)

So now you know I can wear a peplum, but here is how you can too!

Labels I Love – Sacha Drake

So I thought I’d start a new series of posts called Labels I Love. I thought it would be a fun was to share with you all some of the awesome labels that I have found in my travels, and explain why they are so good! And what better label to start with than my all time fave…. Sacha Drake.

Now as many of you know, I have a very personal history with this label – it is the main reason my wardrobe is so full for a start!! I was also one of the first members of staff when Sacha started this label almost 10 years ago now! I’ve made no secret of my personal connection with Sacha Drake on the blog, and I’m proud to have such a close association with this amazing label.

Do you know what squoobs are? And are they the latest trend to try?

Well it was only a matter of time until I blogged about boobs really wasn’t it! The following article appearing on news.com.au a couple of days ago (click here to read). For those of you who can’t be bothered  want to stay and read my blog, basically the article was about an apparent emerging ‘trend’ (I say trend with tongue firmly in cheek) on the red carpet.

Here is some of what was said:

IT WAS once thought the bigger, the better, but it seems there’s a new trend in cleavage, er, popping up on the red carpet. Introducing, the “squoob”.

UK newspaper The Sun coined the term – short for “squashed boobs” – after a raft of celebrities stepped onto the ruby rug sporting rather unnatural cleavage thanks to tight-fitted dresses.

“The squashed boob effect at the top – the squoob – is the result of the clever shaping required to create the perfect hourglass figure,” the British newspaper said.

But the uncomfortable look has been deemed more “oww” than “ooh”.

And here is what is looks like:

My mammaries are hurting just looking at Nic!

Madonna was even worse!

Me thinks she just needs to go the size up!

Although I do think Christina kinda rocks a squoob – after all, they have no where else to go do they!

Plus her boobs don’t seems to be spilling out over the top of her dress, they are just defying gravity and going straight up! Go girl!

Now I don’t know about you, but I don’t agree with The Sun’s interpretation of this trend as a  ”clever shaping required to create the perfect hourglass figure”, to me it just looks like the celebs are squeezing into a frock that is too small for them!

In fact, the hourglass red carpet gal of the moment, Sofia Vergara, manages to find frocks that fit her, and show off her hourglass shape without the risk of suffocating on her breasts!

THIS is how you fit your boobs into a dress! Sofia Vergara at the SAG awards, 2012.

Now I know some of you who are not as generously endowed as Ms Vergara might be saying that you need to squash them up to show us all that you do, in fact have breasts, but I have to disagree. For someone who is fairly generously endowed (I’m a 12DD), I would KILL to be able to pull of some of the frocks that girls with little boobies can….

Naya Rivera from Glee rocks a plunging neckline that would look practically pornographic on a bigger bust
Little boobies help make this look as stunning as it is! (Kristen Wiig)
I would look like a giant mandarin with my DD’s in this amazing frock on Maria Menounos

The moral of this little boob-based rant? Dress for the shape you have ladies!!! These Hollywood stars are being dressed (apparently) by the best of the best, but I still think sometimes they get it wrong.

If you have boobies more like watermelons that limes, embrace them! Push em up, but give the support and show off your teeny tiny waist!

If your boobies are more on the B-cup side of a D-cup, then work it! I WISH I could wear either super-high necklines or super plunging necklines on the red carpet (for all those red carpet events I get invited to……hmmmm).

What are your thoughts on the latest red carpet ‘trend’? Do you agree with me that you need to embrace what you’ve got a be done with it? Or do you squish your boobies up so high that you need an oxygen tank to breathe?

PS. how much spam do you think I’ll get posting about BOOBIES!! haha!
