Hands up if you have stood in front of a wardrobe full of clothes and you still think you have nothing to wear… is your hand up? Mine certainly is!
How many times have you bought something because you were in a rush, or you felt pressured by the lovely girl in the store (she is just doing her job), or you just needed to find something to wear that night, or the WORST of them….. how many times have you bought something that you couldn’t be bothered trying it on?
THIS is how we end up with a wardrobe full of clothes and nothing to wear. Don’t worry – I MAY have been known to make the same mistake (even though you think I would have learnt by now).
So what is the point of this post? Well I want to help you think about shopping a little differently. Here are a few tips to help you buy things that you will actually wear!
1. Know your body shape.
This sounds like a no-brainer, but even I (the alleged “body shape expert”) sometimes still covert things that I KNOW will not look good on me. Even if you love the colour, style and price – if it doesn’t suit you, you will never pull it out of your wardrobe at home.
(For more information on body shapes – watch this space. I will be bringing you a series of posts that are all about dressing for your shape! It’s gonna be awesome!)
2. Do your research.
I even wrote you a ‘how to’ post on this a little while ago (read it here). Whether it’s finding something specific to wear to a friend’s wedding, or just thinking about your new season wardrobe, Do. You. Research!
Grab some fashion mags, have a look at what your most stylish friends are wearing and read blogs!! (here are two of my faves – Kendi Everyday and What I Wore – yes they are both from the US, but they are normal girls who dress with class and style – I have stolen SOOOO many ideas for outfits from both these girls)
Use this tools to find looks that you like and then work out how you can re-create them to suit your own shape, size, lifestyle and budget.
3. Seek professional help.
Yes this might be a selfless personal plug but hey, it’s my blog haha! If you are really stuck (or just need some help getting out of a fashion rut) get yourself some help!
This can be something as simple as actually asking sales assistants for help (I know, it’s out there!) but give the girls some slack, sometimes they actually know what they are talking about. Visit your favourite store and ask the awesome sales assistants in the store to help style you up – you never know, you might try something you never would have considered before and LOVE it!
If you don’t think this will help, hire yourself a stylist (anybody know any good ones…..). No really, the best part of my job it when a client looks in the mirrors and says to me ” I NEVER would have tried this on but I love it!”.
Do you have anything in your wardrobe that you haven’t worn?
Send me a picture of it and I will see if I can give you a few options on how you could wear it!
