I hate oily hair, yet in the same breath, I can’t be bothered washing and drying my hair every day (demanding aren’t I!) so alternatives to afore-mentioned daily washing + drying are highly sort after. One option is dry shampoo.
Now I’ve been a little skeptical about dry shampoo for a while, but others have raved about it (ok, Amber Hughes, I’m finally listening to you!) so I have persisted. And finally, I found it, the perfect dry shampoo.
But first, I can hear you jumping up and down in the background yelling ‘that’s awesome Cait, happy for you, but what the frick is dry shampoo’ so let me explain.
The idea of dry shampoo is that is absorbs any excess oil in your hair to keep it looking fresh between washes (in the olden days we used to use talcum powder remember? Never worked so well on my dark brown hair haha)
Here’s how you use it:
1. take day-old (or older) hair that is feeling a little skanky (you know the hair I mean!)
2. spray the be-jebbers out of your roots with the dry shampoo (in a ventilated area, this stuff is potent!)
3. Massage in – now this is the key to getting it working well, massage the dry shampoo into your roots thoroughly, you want to absorb all the oil and add volume and fullness to your hair
4. Style your hair – I find that dry shampoo adds a bunch of volume to my roots so I tend to style it up in a bun or pony (that way you also won’t be tempted to touch your hair as much, with creates the oiliness in the first place…..)
Which one to use?
I was just using the original one from Batisse, but I recently bought their XXL Volume product (who doesn’t need a bit of extra volume in their hair, oh you don’t? Well go away, we are no longer friends, I ALWAYS need more volume) and it is amazing! It also smells yummier than the original (I think)
But there are heaps of other options from Batisse and others, I almost picked up the product for dark hair (no more talcum powder-looking grey tinged hair) and there is also one for blondes. The best place to pick one up is from your chemist or department store so here are some other options;

I *love* dry shampoo, and I love this post! It’s the ultimate lazy (time poor?!) girl styling essential.
thanks Corrine!! totally with you on the ‘lazy girl’ essential! Me to a tee 🙂
OK, you’ve definitely convinced me to try it. I have super oily fine here so I wash it every day, but by evening its greasy again. This could be perfect for my ‘beauty @work’ box that is already overflowing!
OMG you will love it!! x
I am using the XXL Volume Batiste at the moment. It works AMAZINGLY, however I don’t really NEED more volume!! It makes my hair MASSIVE! I’ve also tried the brunette one. It’s pretty good, just be careful not to spray it on your face!!
haha Kirsten! I just had the most hilarious visual of someone spraying dry shampoo in their face – whoops!
Picked my fav as well, hands down best. Can’t go past the XXL volume and I’ve tried a few.
LOVE the XXL – between that and shellac, has made my beauty routine so much easier! xx
Haha, I just love your writing style Miss C! And no, I’ve never used it but really should as I am the same in my dislike of every day hair washing AND liking of volume. Oh yes. So I shall look for some this week. Thanks!
Kales this stuff would be PERFECT for you!!!! Give you heaps of volume and texture – I’ll bring mine over next week for you to try if you like – Priceline should have heaps of different brands if you want to get some before I get there too xx
I’ve used the Klorane one and didn’t mind it, but recently picked up Instant Rockstar Dirty Weekend dry shampoo for dark hair, and I HATE it. It doesn’t work very well, for one thing, but more importantly, when I go to massage it into my roots, it leaves a dark residue all over my hands and under my finger nails, and then even though I wash it off, if I touch my hair during the day it happens all over again. It’s horrid! So definitely not a recommendation from me. Might try the batiste one though – I wonder if it’s available in Australia?
Does anyone know if all dry shampoos for dark hair will leave that residue? Maybe it’s just a thing…
Thanks for sharing Cait.
Jodie
Oh, just to answer my own question: http://www.batistehair.com.au/where-to-buy – Priceline, Coles, Woolies and David Jones in Oz.
Oh that is so annoying about the residue! I was going to try the ‘brunette’ version of the Batisse, but the volume thing gets me every time! Yes all the usual suspects in Aus have it. In fact I’m back in Brissy in a week and heading straight to Priceline to get it cheaper than I can here haha!
I tried to pick some up at Priceline the other day but they were out (0bviously it’s a popular product!) so I tried the Garnier Fructis extra volume one.
Meh…
Will continue on my quest! Your hair really does undergo an amazing transformation in that video! Batiste should pay you to do an ad 🙂
I saw some in Priceline in the city!! Target also has it sometimes – bummer about the Garnier brand, normally I love their stuff!
