I have a confession to make.
I think I’m obsessed. With jackets. And I’m blaming NZ.
See, when I lived in QLD you didn’t really need them much, except for about a week in the middle of winter (so right about now really).
So now that I’m here in Auckland, jackets have become a huge part of my wardrobe. And they were actually the item that inspired me to write this series (we talked last week about how to Elevate Your Everyday Style with SHOES).
Jackets have SUCH a power to transform an outfit, almost more than anything else I think. So I wanted to give you guys a few ideas on how just changing up your jacket can really help you lift your basic look everyday. And I promise, not a cardigan in sight!
1. Look for structure…. and stretch!
This is one of the best combinations you can find in a jacket. Most people steer clear of ‘jackets’ because they think they are going to be too restricted in their movements, but if you can find one that has a little stretch in it, problem solved!
The structure is going to give you a more defined shape, and therefore make you look more dressed up, and polished. This jacket from Just Jeans (you might still find on their sale rack), looks like a biker jacket, but it’s actually made from a knit fabric – genius right?
I’ve just paired this back with jeans and a sweater, but the shape and structure of the jacket add more to the outfit that a standard cardigan would don’t you think?
Speaking of cardigans….
2. Swap your cardi….. for a bomber!
Bomber jackets have come a long way since the 80’s! They are no longer those over-sized, masculine style that swamps your frame. This incarnation of the bomber jacket is much more slimline and feminine.

They work over dresses or with pants, you can choose from a gazillion prints and colours (you can even have sparkle ones!), and when it comes to sizing, my advice is to try down one. I’m usually a 12, but most of my bombers (in fact, most of my jackets) are a size 10. That way I get a slightly neater fit through the body.
So here are just a few of the gorgeous jackets around right now that you could work into your wardrobe to give it that little everyday lift! Which is your fave?
SHOP THE JACKETS (top row l-r): Witchery Ponte Biker Jacket $199.90 | NastyGal “The Show Must Go On” sequin bomber jacket $79 | Decjuba “Zanita” denim jacket $139.95^ | (bottom row l-r) Boohoo.com “Maya’ floral bomber $30 | Dressing Room “Be A Flamingo” bomber jacket $169 | Birdsnest “Belle” stripe blazer $119.00
There’s some pink sparkles in there, and some flamingos! Clearly my type of jackets right? But really, see what happens tomorrow if you just pop a slightly dressier jacket on with what you are wearing… I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
Stay tuned next week for part 3 of our Elevate Your Everyday Style Series: The Pants…

HI Cait, I am an inverted V, size 12 shoulders, size 12-14 bust but size 8-10 waist. I really struggle with jackets, but I would really love to have a biker style jacket like the stretchy jeans west once featured above. They no longer sell it, do you have any other suggestions? I really need stretch, often for something to fit across the shoulders/back it looks huge on me 🙁
Hey Tracy, yes thats the problem with style blogs! they have such a short shelf-life! I know that Witchery has done a similar style in a ponte fabric – is not on their website, but I’ve definitely seen it in store recently 🙂
Oh I love jackets and vests too. That magical third item really makes outfits I think. Tempted by that Witchery ponte biker….
