Oh yeah. I’ve hit that “man I am PREGNANT” stage of my second pregnancy. I’ll be 27 weeks when this blog goes live, almost into my third trimester! Man that has gone fast!
I’m also at the stage where I’m having to think a bit harder about what to wear everyday, mainly just trying to work out what fits, but also trying to beat this heat (who would be pregnant is summer right??)
I’ve been experimenting a little more this pregnancy with different silhouettes, I’m sick of the same standard navy/white tight-fitting dress that I have 60 of. I want to wear ALL my clothes damn it haha.
SO, for all you other pregnant mummas out there (or even if you’re not pregnant, ALL of these clothes are non-maternity!), I wanted to share my top three pregnancy style hacks with non-maternity clothes!
Style Hack #1: Adjustable fit is your best friend
This basically means look for anything with either STRETCH in the fabric, or the ability to wear it different ways, for instance, a waist tie you can move above or below your belly.
This gorgeous, floaty dress from Bohemian Traders has a waist tie that comes off, so I’ve just tied it above the belly rather than around my natural waist. There is heaps of room in the flow of the dress, so it skims over belly perfectly.
SHOP THE DRESS: Bohemian Traders Ice Blue Stripe “Belle” maxi dress $142.66^
Elastic waist-bands are your other god-send! Wear them either under, or over your belly if it’s a skirt, or under your belly with a long, stretch singlet or tee if you’re wearing pants. (and yes, I know I need to iron this skirt – but hot, and pregnant – cut me some slack!)
SHOP THE LOOK: JustJeans basic stripe singlet $19.95 (I just sized up for extra length) | Cait & Co tassel necklace $35.00 | Mirrou maxi skirt $14.99 (in stores only) | Cait & Co dark pink leather slides $89
SHOP the LOOK: Seed crop top $44.90 | Cait & Co statement necklace $49 | Mirrou maxi skirt $14.99 (in stores only) | Kmart NZ (and Aus) 3 strap sandals $7
Style Hack #2: Embrace the crop top
haha I never thought I’d say that with a pregnant belly, but work with my on this one….. use crop tops to define your waist above your belly. You can wear them over a high-waisted skirt (maternity or not) or over a dress to give your body some shape.
I picked up three awesome ones on sale at SEED recently, and have been living in them!
If you can’t find any crop tops you like, just use a regular length tee or even denim top to tie over the top of the bump.
OUTFIT NOTES: Seed crop top | Asos pleated skirt | Jeanswest sandals – all old season
OUTFIT NOTES: Seed crop top $44.90 | Kmart curved hem skirt in blue strips $7 | Ebay necklace | Neon Birkenstocks from The Iconic (old season)
OUTFIT NOTES: CottonOn graphic tee (this style in store only) 2 for $30 | Asos maternity skirt (sold out) | Kmart cross slides in rose gold $12
Style Hack #3: Go up a size (or two)
I know you want to buy things you want to wear again afterwards, and buying a bigger size might seem like you won’t be able to do that, but the trick is to look for things that can be worn over-sized.
I picked up this cool pair of denim dungarees in a size 16 (and to be honest, CottonOn runs small, so would probably have gone into a 14 anyway, not pregnant, and I’m usually a 12), and the Kmart dress exactly the same reasoning.
There is no stretch in either piece, so I don’t mind they will hang a little looser once bebe is on the outside (plus how awesomely breast-feeding friendly are these denim dungarees!)
SHOP THE LOOK: JustJeans basic stripe singlet $19.95 (I just sized up for extra length) | CottonOn slim overalls $69.99 | Converse trainers $110
SHOP THE LOOK: Kmart off the shoulder dress (I’ve sized up to a 16) $22 | Kmart NZ (and Aus) 3 strap sandals $7
The good thing about all these outfits is that you don’t need to be pregnant to wear them too!
Even though my body is changing, I’m still on the lookout for pieces with versatility, ones that will carry through after baby is born, pieces that I can feed in, and things that I just love wearing, pregnant or not!
So if you’re expecting like me, I hope this gives you a little bit of inspiration, and if you’re not, make sure you send it to any friends who are, and don’t forget you can totally wear all this too!!
Tell me ladies, those of you that have been pregnant, any style hacks you can share with the rest of us? We’d love to know so make sure you tell us in the comments below.
