Ok so I’m going to be honest – I’m not a massive fan of jeans to start with. I just don’t think I have the leg shape for them and most of the time, I’d rather a printed pant anyway (check this post on how to wear a printed pant)…. BUT I do have to say, the latest look in jeans has definitely caught my eye – Boyfriend Jeans.
So what ARE Boyfriend Jeans?
“Boyfriend” is a fashion term pretty much applied to anything that looks like you’ve stolen it from your boyfriend’s closet and turned it into something you can wear – ie. slightly oversized and a little masculine. Jeans are the big one, but there are “boyfriend blazers”, “boyfriend shirts” etc etc.
What I love about this trend in jeans, is that it DOES actually suit everyone – but as usual, it’s about HOW you wear them that will dictate if you look good in them or not.
There are two distinguishing features on most BF jeans (shall we call them BF jeans from now on? My hands are tired from typing “boyfriend” all the time, and to be honest, it’s one of those words I JUST. CANNOT. TYPE. CORRECTLY….. EVER, boyfreind, boyfeind, boyfrned… sorry I digress…. where were we? BF jeans! yes!) Distinguishing features – distressed fabric and cuffed hems.
They are normally a medium-light colour, and sometimes (and I think more flattering) slightly oversized.
Like I said, I’m not a MASSIVE fan of jeans in general, but I don’t min me a BF jean because they give my legs a little more room all the way down (as opposed to being tight and showing off the shape of the leg too much).
How to wear them?
Here’s my fave way to wear them – relaxed, with a bright, girly coloured top and converse trainers.
Jeans – Jeanswest (4 years ago, similar here) Top – Sussan (on sale last summer. Yes they ship to NZ. I asked.) and scarf – CottonOn (recently)
The other way to rock your BF jeans is to dress them up with a sharp blazer and feminine heels, like so…..
Jeans – Jeanswest (4 years ago, similar here) Blazer – Zara (3 years ago) Heels – Wittner shoes (4 years ago) necklaces Blue Bungalow (available now)
Stylist note: Make sure that your BF jeans are rolled up enough at the hem to expose your ankle. This is the trick to still looking slim when wearing, for all intents and purposes, too-big jeans.
Where to buy some yourself?
That is a very good question. Now I’ve done the leg work (there may have even been some trying on involved) Give this bunch a go:
SHOP THE LOOK. Jeanswest relaxed bootcut jeans were $69.99 now $29.99 | CottonOn CO ex-boyfriend jeans $49.95 | Country Road boyfriend jeans $139.00 | James Jeans from shopbop.com $213.94
Have you tried a boyfriend jean yet? Is it a trend you are likely to give a go? Tell me what you think of this latest look in the comments below – I’d love to know!
Until Next Time

It took me ages to find a pair that suited me (I ended up with the Cotton On ones actually). I really like the look and how you have worn them but it doesn’t quite work for me. I need something a bit more fitted on the top. It took a bit of fiddling about but I got there in the end.
Glad you persevered Kelly and found a way to wear them! not everyone will be able to wear things the same, sometimes some tinkering is required 🙂
I am also not a jean person, but I have a pair of BF jeans that I purchased about 5 years ago. I have only just started wearing them again, & think I’ll purchase a lighter more distressed pair as well. Other types of jeans don’t suit me as I have no butt & they look terrible.
Oh my gosh Lisa I think we are the same person! (except for the ‘no butt thing’ – I have ample) but mine are almost 5 years old too! Sounds like BF jeans are perfect for you 🙂
Morning Cait! Would you wear these jeans with an ankle boot? It will still be months before it will be warm enough to wear anything other than boots in Canberra. For those of us living in a winter that lasts 3/4 of the year, should we stick to skinny jeans?
Thanks, as always, for another interesting post 🙂
Jodie
Hey Jodie, you can totally wear these with an ankle boot! It gets’s pretty freezing here in Auckland too (I just had merino socks under my converse haha!). Maybe pick your days, or occasions. If it’s somewhere that you know you’ll be inside, like an event where you are going from car to inside, a heel would work.
I feel your pain though, I was just thinking to myself, am I EVER going to get out of tights and boots haha!
