Yep – hard-hitting journalism here ladies! But seriously. For those of you not in NZ, let me update you quickly. It was COLD yesterday. Like 17 layers of wool, winds at 100 kph, I can’t feel my fingers, it’s hailing in the middle of the city COLD.

When it’s that cold, you instinct is to just dress as warmly as you can, so when a darling friend and client of mine called me last night to ask is it ok to wear UGG boots outside on a day like today, it’s totally understandable (my answer was still a resounding NO just for the record – controversial I know, but if you want to look like you have a little bit of style, UGGS do not go outside)

True story.

True story.

What I did promise my lovely Jasmine was that I would a) find her other options that would keep her tootsies just as warm, and b) that I would write a blog post about said other options – so here it is.

Why it’s not ok to wear UGG boots outside.

Would you wear your dressing gown to work? Your flannelette PJ’s to the post office? No? Well this is why we don’t wear out UGG boots outside. They are – for all intents and purposes – big, warm, tall slippers.

They are designed to be worn inside your house, while you are relaxing on your couch, or cooking your dinner (or writing a blog – I have mine on now!) so you don’t wear them outside where they get all dirty and yucky – and then you traipse that back into your house.

Plus, they are actually quite ugly shoes – they don’t look good, or flatter anyone’s leg shape. Oh and Snookie wears them. The end.

So what do I wear instead?

Good question, thanks for asking. If you want to still feel warm and snug, there are a few other options that will keep your tootsies warm and dry when it’s cold and grim out.

1. Knee high leather boots +  thick socks

Boots: Kosheen from Styletread.co.nz $350. Socks: bed socks from Postie.co.nz $3.49

Get the warm, snuggly UGG feeling with some awesome thick, fluffy socks! That, plus a high leather boot will keep your legs toasty warm (and dry) all winter long.

Opt for a real leather if you can, it will keep your legs warmer, and the longer the better. Add a pair of ponte pants instead of your normal leggings for even more insulation.

2. Merino socks – with ANYTHING

Boots: Bellina boots from Mi Piaci $320 (click here to buy) Socks: Merino socks from Postie.co.nz 2 pkt $11.98 (click here to buy)

Merino socks are seriously the best discovery I have made since I arrived in NZ (that, and Pineapple Lumps – OMG yum!). They really do keep your feet warm!

Again, pair them with a boot for extra warmth. Then see memo about re ponte pants (I PROMISE there is a whole blog coming on them soon!)

3. Stay in.

4. Almost UGG boots

So they are made by the same people, but they have been made specifically to be worn outside! They aren’t the best looking boot, but they do have a sheeps wool lining so they will keep you warm

These are the ONLY acceptable type of ugg boots to be worn outside. Tall boots by UGG: $250 (click here to buy)

So this may have been a harsher post than some, but NO UGGS OUTSIDE is one of my three fundamental style rules so I hope you understand! (I only have three, everything else is negotiable). For the record, the other two are “Leggings are NOT pants” and “Black is ALWAYS the new black”.

I hope this helps keep your tootsies warm this winter…. now I’m off to order a couple of dozen pairs of those merino socks! They are the best!
