I know, sounds like a kinda random blog post, but it’s definitely one of those things I get asked about by blog readers and styling clients quite a bit.
One gorgeous reader sent me a message the other day asking when was the right time to cuff jeans and when should she wear them down – so I told her I’d answer in a blog post! (this one’s for you Nikki)
The quick answer for “When to cuff your jeans?” Pretty much any time is fine! Blog post done.
Kidding!
But really, by cuffing your jeans once or twice, on any leg, you’re exposing the slimmest part of your leg – your ankle – therefore drawing attention to that slim part, therefore making the rest of your leg appear as slim. So any time you want to make your leg look slimmer, then cuff away.
Saying that, dressing well for your shape is all about playing with proportion – and cuffing your jeans can play with your proportion. So my biggest tip when cuffing your jeans is to think about what you are wearing on the top half.
If you are wearing a longer top that you don’t tuck in, you want to still make your legs look as long as possible, so DON’T cuff your jeans.
If you are wearing a top that is shorted or you can tuck in, you can have a go at cuffing your jeans. Your legs will still look longer, because you’ve tucked in your top therefore exposing more of your legs.
Also, the other simple rule I often follow is if you are wearing HEELS, you can wear your jeans full length, if you are wearing FLATS, try cuffing your jeans, exposing that lower part of your leg, showing off that slender ankle of yours.
What about how/when to cuff skinny jeans with ankle boots?
This is the time I ALWAYS cuff my jeans.
Rather than trying to tuck in the ends of your skinny jeans into your short boots, cuff them so the hem of the jeans sit on the top of the boots. If it’s cold, you can still wear socks and no one will know, but it just allows your jeans and boots to play nicely together without getting all tangled and bunchy and stuff.
Again, these are just guidelines! If you want to wear a long top and cuff your jeans then go for it! Hey, I’m sure I do it all the time!
So I hope that helps answer your question a wee bit Nikki! But remember everybody, just guidelines – do what feels right for you.
can you cuff your jeans at any age? like 56yrs old
of course you can! Style shouldn’t be restricted by age 🙂
Great post. I usually cuff when wearing flats, but awkwardly tuck into ankle boots. Looking forward to trying the cuff this winter!
Oh yay! Glad I could help 🙂
Brilliant post! I do love a good cuff or two, and I totally agree that you should always cuff a skinny jean when wearing ankle boots. Love the tip about long top = long jean. x
