Size and shape. It’s a minefield right?
I’ve had so many discussions with readers and clients and my AMAZING StyleMe community about the need for diversity in fashion advertising and marketing. People (you) always tell me that you love reading the blog because I’m just me, a size and shape that isn’t always portrayed in the brand marketing. And for that, I say thank you! xx
So why not take it one step further! I want to show you guys what a series of garments look like on different women in the same size, so you can perhaps find a body shape you relate to more.
I also really wanted to do this blog series, because I get SO MANY COMMENTS on my outfit posts which go something like, “oh that looks great on you, but I could never wear that because *insert standard complaint about their own body here”.
Can I tell you, MAN that pisses me off! For two reasons.
A – you are unique and beautiful as you are, and we all need to stop focusing on the bits we don’t like, and we definitely need to stop them restricting what we wear.
B- 99.95% of the time, I guarantee you, when someone has made a comment like that, they haven’t even TRIED. IT. ON!
So I thought but getting a bunch of lovely readers together of different ages, stages, shapes and heights but all a size 12, I could show you how the same garment can look amazing on a bunch of different bodies.
Let’s meet my three lovely readers, and see how amazing they all look;
Meet Kate, 49, 166cm tall, size 12.
Describes her body (in her own words) as an upside down triangle although her measurements for waist and hip are exactly the same! Very wide back and a big bust, just overall top heavy!

Kate was hesitant to tie the dress around her waist, as she was sure, with a bigger bust, it would cut her off.
BUT how amazing does she look! The belt has given her amazing shape, and the ruffle on the bottom of the dress has actually given her body some balance, so in her mind, taken away the “upside down triangle” look.
Kate also has great legs, so tying the dress made it slightly shorter. I also love it without the belt on her, and she felt comfortable in it both ways – which is THE most important thing.
Meet Rachel, 29, 170cm tall, size 12.
She describes her body as ever-changing currently and trying to understand the changes. Having had Toby 7 months ago, she is now working with a bigger bust however would say she has an hourglass figure.
RACHEL IS WEARING: EziBuy Emerge Linen Ruffle Sleeve Dress is petal in a size 12 $89.99
Being a new mumma to gorgeous Toby, Rachel was worried about mummy tummy when the dress was tied. But the beauty of this frock is that it’s not only lined, but the fabric is quite thick so it just skims over her body beautifully.
We also tied the tie higher up that Rachel expected, on her natural waist, which just helps to make her legs look longer, plus the shortened length of being tied, meant that the dress looked great with flats this way too.
Meet Tracey, 45, 171cm, size 12
She describes her body as a bigger bust and shoulders with straight torso but great legs (love that!)
TRACEY IS WEARING: EziBuy Emerge Linen Ruffle Sleeve Dress is petal in a size 12 $89.99
So we did something a little different with the dress on Tracey, and tied the tie around the back (we just hooked it through the belt loops and tied it back on itself).
It still gives her shape, without having to be tied in front. BUT she also looks BANGING with the tie don’t you think?
One thing Tracey said to me was that she ALWAYS avoids high necks because it makes her boobs feel bigger – simple solution? I used a necklace to break up the area across Tracey’s bust, creating the same line as a V-neck.
Tracey loved this dress so much, she actually went straight to EziBuy after the shoot and grabbed one for herself haha!
Before we shot this dress, two of the three ladies had said that they wouldn’t have even tried it on. Colour and shape, on the hanger, they just didn’t think would work on them.
BUT with a few simple tweaks for each person, it looks AMAZING on all three of the ladies don’t you agree?
We shot a few more looks that I can’t wait to bring you over the next few weeks, and if you have a particular style of garment you’d like to see on different shapes then please let me know! I’m definitely going to do more of these shoots.
Thanks again to my stunning readers who put their hand up to be a part of this, I love you guys and everything I do it to help YOU feel more confident in your everyday style.
Keep being amazing!
Until Next Time, In Love & Style Always,
Thanks for your reply – loved the post and love the idea and that’s very cool that you took on those three gorgeous ladies without knowing their shapes 🙂
Keep up the good work.
great post. Really really positive too
thanks Felicity! It was such a fun day to shoot too x
Always love seeing the same dress on different women.
thanks love! It’s always nice to be able to showcase clothes I love on other people too
Thank you for your post – what a great idea doing the same dress on 3 different shapes! I think you may be missing a shape though .. .what happened to good old NZ pear shape? All three of your beautiful ladies had good boobs & great legs. Love to see someone with big thighs & less boobs.
Hey Jules, the pear shape will certainly make an appearance, don’t worry!
When I put a callout, these were the three gorgeous ladies who were amongst the first that replied and I didn’t specifically ask them what their shape was.
I actually didn’t want to pigeonhole anyone, that’s why I asked them to describe their bodies themselves (two of them just happened to be very similar this time) and therefore didn’t ask for “specific shapes.
I’m not always going to be able to cover every single body part and size in every blog, and like I said in the post, it’s a series, so rest assured, some different shapes will be making an appearance soon.
Even if you don’t feel like you see you shape represented in every post, think about some of the other things you can take away from each post – do you have the same colouring as one of the gorgeous ladies, are you the same height (we talked about how to play with the length of the dress), or at the same stage in life / age as someone and dealing with similar things.
Love this post! Great to see different ladies wearing the same dress.
thanks Wendy, wait until you see the next one too! x
Love these posts!
thanks Erica! Watch this space for more xx
