The Linen Shirt. This is definitely a style staple that gets over-looked in our wardrobes these days, but it’s one of those pieces that has such versatility (one of my favourite things in a garment as you know!).
Linen is such a beautiful, natural fibre to wear. Unlike some fabrics, it actually gets softer and more wearable with age, and guess what, it’s not as scary as you think to care for either (in fact, I’ve got the busy-girls guide to easy linen care below, just for you!).
So when the talented team at Max combined a gorgeous, wearable fabric like linen, with a classic collared shirt style for this upcoming season’s collection, we thought it was the perfect item to use in the latest edition of my long-running 1 item, 3 ways post – don’t you agree?
I want to show you how you can get heaps of wear out of this classic wardrobe staple, no matter what your style personality!
So first off, here is the gorgeous Max linen shirt I’m talking about….
SHOP THE LINEN SHIRT FROM MAX $99.99 HERE
There are four lovely colours to choose from, I’m using two (the white and the blue marle) in this post. And here are just three of the many ways you can work this into your everyday wardrobe…..
WAY 1: Wear it With Your Jeans
GET THE LOOKS: Max linen shirt in white $99.99 | Max “Montana” girlfriend embroidered jeans $129.99 | Max linen shirt in blue marle $99.99 | Max “Brooklyn” SS scoop neck tee in black and white $49.99 | Max “Vienna” release hem jeans in ballet pink $99.99
What a classic style combo: jeans + linen shirt. So why not mix it up a little? Pair your classic white linen shirt with some on-trend embroidered jeans, adding a little personality into the mix, or use the linen shirt as a light layer with your everyday jeans + tee just to lift the look a little…..like so.
WAY 2: Tuck it into a Skirt
GET THE LOOK HERE: Max linen shirt in white $99.99 | Max pleated satin skirt $99.99 (available August 14)
This is my usual way to wear a shirt, go for the feminine look and tuck it into a skirt (or you could also tie it like I have in the look above). The trick is all in the tuck; – you want to pull some of the shirt back over the waistband of the skirt to create a blousing effect.
Oh, and speaking of waist-bands, make sure that’s where it sits, on your waist! Don’t pull it down to your hips, you want to show off where you are slimmest (and trust me, it’s your waist!)
WAY 3: Tie it Around Your Waist
SHOP THE LOOK: Max “Sydney” crew tee in white $49.99 | Max “Mia” midi skip dress $149.99 | Max Linen Shirt in blue marle $99.99
This is a great trick for a couple of reasons.
Reason 1: It will help define your waist, especially if you are wearing something (like this gorgeous slip dress) that has a slightly more relaxed fit.
Reason 2: It can help with tummy coverage if you are tucking a top in, or wearing something more fitted than usual.
Plus it just adds a little extra something to an everyday look.
But how do you look after your linen?
So now you’ve got a couple of different ideas on how to style your linen shirt, but you’re still worried about the fabric care, well my friend, it’s much more simple that you think!
First of all, make sure you follow the specific care instructions on every garment, as they may contain other fabrics in trims etc, so that’s the best place to start, but in a nut-shell, here’s the busy-girl’s guide to caring for your linen…..
Three ways to style it, and some simple tips on how to care for your linen shirt… now the only question is what colour to start with right?
So tell me, how do you like to wear your linen? Relaxed and creased? Or crisp and clean? And which is your favourite way to style it? I’d love to know in the comments below, so don’t be shy!

Hi Caitlin,I love your blogs with helpful hints, I have recently purchased a Linen shirt and was wondering when you tie it in the front the back of mine seems to bunch and look weird,do you have any tips or am I just over thinking the whole look.
Thanks ❤️
Hey Kerry, I totally know what you mean – I just make sure it kinda sits tight around the bottom and let it blouse over the top then… does that make sense? But also, what you look like from behind isn’t your problem, you can’t see, so don’t worry about it haha! 😉
