Yes I know that black matches black, but it’s almost summer! It’s time to step AWAY from the black (yes, Kiwis – I’m talking to you! Aussies, you got this already).

Whenever I’m trying to get my personal styling clients here in Auckland into colour (because they say they want to wear colour!) often they think that they have to match that colour back with black or white.

But no! You can have SO much fun with different colour combinations (and navy with black does not count as an exciting colour combo). Sure we can match the “complimentary colours” on the colour wheel (they are the ones opposite to each other btw) but that’s just boring.

It’s time to mix up your colour combos and try something unexpected. There are heaps of places to draw inspiration from, and it doesn’t just have to be clothes.

And in honour of unexpected matches, the team at Kapiti have set me a styling challenge! To help celebrate the launch of their three YUMMY Kapiti Whipped Sorbet flavours (Peach & Melon, Blood Orange & Cranberry, and Pear & Feijoa), I’ve put together three inspiration boards, plus three outfits, based off each colour and flavour combo to help inspire YOU to play with unexpected colour combos.

Plus you could WIN a $100 prezzy card to try your new favourite colour combo out! (more on that below…….) but first, the clothes!

PEACH & MELON

The first time I tried the Peach & Melon sorbet I was struck by how well each flavour complimented each other – a subtle match where both the flavours and the colour combo work together so well for spring. Fresh and clean colours that work really well with white, whack on some fake tan and rock this combo into the summer!

Blood Orange & Cranberry

This is my fave flavour of the sorbets – it’s so fresh and tangy! Yum!!! And even though the colour combo has a slightly autumnal feel to it, I still think it’s a really fun one to try now (especially if the lighter colours in the other combos don’t appeal to you).

Orange is quite a trend colour at the moment, it’s easy to find! But matching it back with the deep cranberry colour, even on a nail or a lip, gives it a slightly more sophisticated edge don’t you think?

Here’s the outfit combo I’ve created for you! I think I want it all!

Feijoa & Pear

I love mixing two tones of the same colour. It’s such a soft, sophisticated way of getting more colour into your wardrobe, just like the taste of this sorbet – it’s subtle and sophisticated, not sickly-sweet like ice-cream can be, so refreshing for a hot day.

It’s also a great way to ease yourself into wearing colour. You’re not confronted by having to choose two colours that go together, you can just pick ONE colour your like, and wear different shades of it. Keep the accessories neutral so you don’t look too matchy-matchy, and you’re good to go!
