Random fact #475 you might not know about me. I love a good movie, particularly ones that contain an extra bit of song and dance.
So when La La Land came out recently, I couldn’t WAIT to see it! And it did not disappoint.
I love how it combined a modern story with the Old Hollywood glam of those iconic movies, but more importantly, I LOVED the costumes!!
So when the lovely folks at SKY came to me and wanted me to let you know about La La Land now being available to book and view through SKY Box Office, I couldn’t wait to talk about the fabulous fashion inspiration this film has to offer, mainly the costumes that Emma Stone wore as Mia, PLUS how you can incorporate a little bit of Hollywood Glam into your everyday style.
1. Add some femininity to your style
I lOVE the shape of Mia’s dresses in this film. They all lend themselves to be flung around when breaking out into song and dance (as one does), but also, they are just so lovely and feminine! You don’t have to wear a dress to add some femininity to your style though (if you want to, see below though). I’ve got the look below with a skirt and knit, perfect for work or play.
GET THE LOOK: Whistle knit from Farmers $79.99 (in store only) | Asos midi skirt $45.
2. Bring on the block colours
All of the costumes for Mia are very deliberately block colours. The director wanted Mia’s looks to mirror the olden days of the technicolour movies as well as show Mia as a positive character (particularly at the start of the film)
Even though we are headed into winter, there is still plenty of opportunity to get your cues from Emma’s gorgeous colour palette.
SHOP THE COLOURS: (l-r) Esprit wool coat $259.95 | Decjuba off the shoulder dress $119.95^ | Next jumpsuit from EziBuy $47.00 | S/W/F dress from The Iconic $269.00^ | Jacqui E knit top $69.95
3. Make dresses your friend
I LOVE a good dress, because sometimes I want to be lazy and it’s only one item of clothing you have to think about, rather than trying to match as top and bottom half.
But really, dresses are such a classic look, and Mia definitely does them justice in the film. I think the thing I love the most about the dresses that she wears, is that they could have been right out of the 50’s even though the film is set in modern day! Talk about classic.
Here are few dresses that mirror Mia’s look perfectly….
SHOP THE FROCKS: (l-r) Boohoo “Ella” Dress $32 | Atmos&Here Arcacia Wrap Dress from The Iconic $99.95^ | Capture Pintuck Dress from EziBuy $59.95 (on sale) | Sacha Drake “Cinema Meccina” Dress $299
There’s something magical about a musical, and I think the costumes definitely play a part in that magic. But what I also love about what Emma Stone, as Mia, wears in La La Land, is the accessibility of her clothes, we can all emulate her looks in our everyday life (now if only I could sing and dance like her too!)
Still haven’t seen La La Land, or itching to see it again and check out all of Mia’s gorgeous looks?

Love this style. I naturally gravitate towards the 20’s but drop waists do nothing for me. The 50’s is all about the waist! And love that the dress I like the most is nearly the cheapest! And that I live in Palmy and ezibuy is near at hand.
Thanks Cait.
