Come on, own up. We’ve all had one of these moments I’m sure (I know I have!). There are plenty of things that can go wrong when getting dressed in the morning, but MOST of us, MOST of the time seem to have things under control.
BUT just sometimes we might get it little bit wrong…and that’s ok, because I’m here to give you my expert styling tips on how to FIX these common fashion faux pas and take the stress out of getting dressed in the morning.
1. The VPL (visible pantie line)
Hands up if you really hate that word too….. anyway! Girls you REALLY shouldn’t have this problem anymore. There are SO many different types of underwear out there now designed specifically so this doesn’t happen.
My favourite are this little babies from Lyric at Farmers – they have a laser-cut edge (so they really are seamless) that sits flush with your skin, and the come in different styles depending on what you need (boy-leg, high waisted, g-string etc) – VPL be gone!!
2. Tights as Pants
Really? we haven’t worked this out yet? If you can see through them, the are NOT pants. Tights are worn with dresses. Full stop. The end. If you want the same look, invest in some jeggings, skinny jeans or ponte pants – they will still give you the same silhouette, with a little more support and coverage.
Now this has NOTHING to do with body confidence! (I’m the QUEEN of love your body as it is!) it’s actually about showing the people around you a little more respect, they don’t need to see what you have for breakfast this morning. Really, the don’t. Stick to the slightly thicker options.
3. Streaky fake tan
Now I know this is technically not a FASHION faux pas….. more beauty, but they go hand in hand. Plus, coming into summer it’s something we have to all be careful of.
So I’m all for the at-home self-tanning option, I mean, who has the time or the money to be spray tanning every week! BUT there are a few simple ways to stop the bad fake tan happening.
- apply a gradual tanner rather than a deep colour
- use a tanner with some colour to it so you can see where you’ve been
- get a friend/partner to help reach those hard-to-reach places
- see a professional (not ALL the time, but maybe for important occasions)
- and I know this goes without saying, but WASH YOUR HANDS after you’ve tanned!
4. Visible/wrong colour underwear
Now call me up-tight but as a stylist, I see the place of underwear to be just that. To be worn UNDER clothes and give hidden support and coverage in the right areas. So please think about what you are wearing, and think about what underwear you own, and make sure they work together.
There are some great strapless bras out there these days, even for us bigger-busted girls, so no need for straps showing, and ladies, if you are going to wear WHITE, please wear  NUDE/NEUTRAL coloured underwear. We can see the white through the white, and we can REALLY see that black, or hot pink through the white.
So think about underwear as your foundation garments, they are there to make whatever the top layer is look it’s best. Unless you are Carrie Bradshaw…. then you have my permission to keep looking fabulous!
5. Deodorant Marks on your clothes
So points for making sure you smell good in the morning, and that you won’t sweat through your clothes during the day. But how many times have you got to work and realised that there is a big white smudge up your new black silk dress?!
Now unless you have some crazy, double-jointed shoulders, you are bound to get deodorant stains on your clothes every now and then when putting them on, but the solution is simple….. Invest in a deodorant designed NOT to mark.
Rexona Invisible Dry is definitely one to try! I’ve been using it myself and not only does it protect me from sweating on my clothes all day long, it protects my clothes (much more important!) for white marks AND those yellow stains some deodorants can leave. As a stylist, stained clothes are definitely something I stress about so this deodorant leaves me feeling confident to get on with my day.
So now that I’ve given you some quick, easy solutions some of the most common fashion faux pas out there, hopefully your life (or at least your fashion-related life) will be that little less stressful!
Tell me the best (worst?!) fashion faux pas you’ve seen in the comments below and let’s work out how to nail those on the head too!Â
Until next time,

Hahaha cute! I agree with them all! One more for me would be the itsy bitsy rectangle. I am not against anything low cut + sleeveless or super short (i.e. miniskirts) but if the amount of clothing on you only shapes up as a tiny rectangle than I recommend checking your outfit again. Show some up top or some down below (I mean legs only) Not both!
I hear ya!
Haha this post made my laugh. One of my biggest pet peeves is the VPL. Turn around and check your butt out in the mirror before you leave the house!!
I know right?!?! It’s not that hard haha!
Another great post thanks Cait! I am going to try that Rexona invisible Dry.
Happy Friday to you!
thanks Kim! It’s definitely saved me in a few situations xx
Underwear faux pas – I was walking behind a woman who was wearing body shaper underwear and they were doing a great job on her tummy but were so tight at the top and bottom that she looked sort of segmented, like an insect. I try not to judge other people’s dress sense because god knows I’m not perfect but oh my it was like driving past an accident, you just had to stare.
Haha! I know exactly what you mean xx
Hahaha those tights with the Private Sector and Public Domain cracked me up 🙂
Some women who wear shorts so short that their butt creases are hanging out the bottom, should measure with these tights! Haha!
Great post my dear.

Agreed on all counts! I have one to add to the list, ok two. Racer back tops with normal bra straps. And wearing high heels that are so high you can’t walk in them. Neither are a good look.
OMG SO with you on the racer back! There are enough bras out there these days for women to sort that out haha
Great tips! I a big believer no leggings are not pants! So well said!
Also big on the underwear as well!
Great post!
