You don’t put all your pizza toppings just on one corner of a pizza do you? Well it’s the same with accessories! Spread them out! (weird analogy I know, but hey, it works!). If you have some fabulous earrings on, you don’t want to crowd them by wearing a striking statement necklace too! There’s too much going on up top!
But HOW do you know what accessories to wear when and with what?
Answer = It’s all about BALANCE.
Okay, so balancing your accessories is not as hard as balancing on a rope while looking elegant, but if you are new at it, it can seem just as intimidating!
There are a few simple combinations of accessories that I use myself and with my clients that take all the stress out of getting the balance right. Here are just a few:
1. Statement necklace with a cocktail ring
2. Big earrings with a stack of bangles
3. Colourful clutch and shoes
4. Fedora hat with a slouch bag
5. Long necklace with bright shoes
Here’s an example of a look with maybe a few too many accessories, and one as I would wear it…..
The look on the left for me is a little over-styled. I’m not saying these accessories are BAD, I think there are just a few too many going on in the one place.
The look on the right is streamline and chic, the accessories are evenly spaced to draw the eye up and down the body, plus they are not crowding each other.
You want to use your accessories to draw people’s attention – and if you can draw their attention to the extremities of your body, it makes you look taller and thinner (trust me!)

Accessorising is all about BALANCE. Not too many, not too few – just the right amount.

How do you balance your accessories? Do you think I’ve got the balance right?
Cait xo
Advice was great for a big Italian family lunch yesterday. Summer-y black dress with bright flat sandals that matched bracelet and earrings. I looked great and felt confident. Thanks Cait
I never wear a necklace with earrings It’s always one or the other. I will combine bracelets with either of these. I actually try not to match my bag and shoes but have them complementary. I’m really enjoying these posts thanks Cait!
I totally agree that getting the balance right is the key to accessorizing, I always try to remember Coco Chanel’s advice: ‘Before you leave the house look in the mirror and remove one accessory’ but it can be so tricky sometimes. Thanks for the great post!
