I’m kinda a frock girl, it helps that I worked for the Frock Queen of Queensland for years! (Read more about her here!). My body-shape is also conducive to dresses (hides the bum and thighs, generally shows off the waist – gold!) so they are always a go-to look for me!
So I’m sure you can imagine my delight when it got hot enough over here in NZ to actually WEAR SOME this summer!! And since I am now full into summer dress-wearing mode, I wanted to share with YOU, my lovely readers, why I love them so much!
1. Dresses make it easy to get dressed in the morning!
I HATE trying to match pants (or skirts) and tops! I’m not so good at it (probs shouldn’t admit that as a personal stylist, but hey! We’re all friends here). It takes that little bit more brain power in the morning (something I’m often short of at that time of day) to try and match things together so throw on a dress instead!
All you need to do then is add some fun accessories!

Fun accessories can make the look! I’m wearing this Gorman dress with a necklace from eBay, sandals from Witchery and a scrabble-piece ring from a market stall.
2. Dresses are actually quite versatile!
I’m a MASSIVE fan of having versatile pieces in your wardrobe and dresses are a great base piece to start almost any look. Take this pretty floral dress from Portmans, I’ve styled it just on its own for a summer party by adding a colourful wedge and a bright cuff, but as the weather gets a little cooler, I’ve added a blazer, some tights and ankle boots and voila! An outfit appropriate for work (for most people)
This great little frock from Witchery takes me through from Summer to Winter! It works with light or dark accessories because of the print which adds to the versatility too!
3. Dresses are amazing on curves!
I love dresses because they are often the best thing for showing off my shape! Whether they are waisted (or fitted through the waist) or nice and cute and short, dresses show off my best assets so I always feel good in a frock! (I’m not a fan of mentioning the negative things, but I love shift dresses because they also hide my tummy, which is probs my least favourite body part! eek!!)

Show off killer curves with a fitted frock! There is a dress type out there for every body shape! Remember, it’s all about showing off your good bits!)

Both these frocks play up my best features – the one of the left shows of my waist with the fit & flare shape, and the little shortie on the right show off my pins! (flats and all!)
So now you’ve seen some of my best dresses (and why I love them!) here are some dresses that I think you guys will love too!

Hey Cait – wondering if you knew of any good, reasonably priced maxis. I’m a definite pear and would rather cover up my legs. The trouble I find with maxis is that they make my butt look massive. Or they have stripes which look awful on me – any suggestions?
Hey Di! Thanks for the question, it’s really hard to find a good maxi!! I find Jeanswest do really good maxis in general (and they are nice and long, which is AWESOME if you are tall). This one is great, and is on sale at the mo (http://www.jeanswest.com.au/womens/dresses-skirts/milla-jersey-maxi-dress.html) – I know it’s black, but you can make it look more summery by adding some colourful jewellery or a scarf.
The trick with finding a maxi for a pear shape is to find one that just skims off your bum, without being to full in the skirt, so you should try maxis in a jersey fabric (I know, I know, scary – but don’t be worried by jersey, you just need the right undies, seem free. Jersey has beautiful drape that will hang off the right places, but not add too much volume).
The other one you can try (it’s a little more expensive) is this one (http://www.sachadrake.com/Stretch_Solutions/Shop_Dresses/SSINJ1AD03CO/ADJUSTABLE-MAXI-DRESS.html) it comes in 4 colours and is MADE for a pear! If you would like to try one on (and you are in Auckland) let me know as I will carry a sample range of this product shortly (Sacha Drake is an AMAZING AUS designer I’m bringing into NZ – perfect for different body shapes).
I hope that helps a little??
xx
That Sacha Drake one looks amazing! Thanks for that – I’ll keep an eye out for when you’re bringing the range to Auckland – I’d be definitely keen to see that one in person. Thanks heaps!
Great article.
Okay – you’ve convinced me….
Looking forward to my wardrobe assessment and shopping spree to frock me out! 😉
