I think it’s a kiwi thing right? To wear some black, and layer it with black, and maybe splash out with some grey in there if you’re feeling adventurous? Kidding! (but kinda not). Hey, I can’t talk – I find myself wearing more and more black each winter I spend in Auckland.

As a Style Coach, I find so many of my clients are really wanting to add a bit of colour to their wardrobes. They have a sea of black and grey for winter, and the occasional red or blue popped in there but they are just not confident enough, or sure how to add colour to their outfits everyday.

So let’s look at how YOU can add a little bit of colour every day!

Work out what colours you like

This sounds silly, but wearing colours you LIKE will automatically lift your mood. There is no point going for a bright yellow shirt if yellow doesn’t float your boat.

Colours you like are often the ones that suit you too (it probably fundamentally part of the reason you like the colour!) so why not start there?

I LOVE this colour. It makes me feel good when I wear it, so I wear if often.

Start small, with accessories

Scarves, shoes, necklaces and bags are a great way to add a pop of colour without feeling like your whole outfit has to be bold and bright! Bright colours generally stand up better with blacks and greys as they contrast strongly against them so try to go as bright as you can!

I tend to go for the scarves in winter, and the statement jewellery and bright bags in Summer (makes sense right?).

Speaking of Winter, I think it’s EXTRA important to make the effort to add colour when it’s colder, darker and wetter – you’d be surprised how much it affects your mood! Check out THIS POST from The Honest Company blog on how colour can affect AND reflect your mood – food for thought!

Clearly scarves are a big part of my wardrobe (as are printed pants looking at these outfits!)

Why not add some colour on your head? A hat or beanie is another great way to add that colour POP!

Shoes and bags are THE EASIEST way to add that little bit of colour to any outfit. Where is the rule that says just because you are wearing a black dress, you have to wear black shoes?
