So as you may or may not know I recently got engaged! (Read about it here) Very exciting, yes. An instant ki-bosh on the shopping of any sort? Also yes. My credit cards have pretty much been confiscated and I have been given strict instructions that for the next 12 months if it’s not for the wedding, it’s not to be bought.
Hmmmmmm.
So time to get creative! I mean, let’s face it, I certainly don’t have a shortage of clothes (in fact my clothes have a room of their own) but that doesn’t stop the need (?) want to buy more. However, this year I might just have to…….
Soooooooo it’s time to start SHOPPING MY OWN WARDROBE and you are going to play along at home! Everyone (yes, everyone) has some great pieces of clothing in their wardrobes that we just don’t wear. Whether it’s because we don’t know how to wear them, we have forgotten about them (don’t look at me like that, I KNOW that happens…) or we just like to stick to our favourites.
And then when we have ‘nothing to wear’ (yes I said it with “” – have you ever gone outside naked??!?!? No, then you DO have something to wear) we go out and buy MORE things that we try and stuff into our wardrobes.
Well this year things are going to be different, I want to get excited about ALL the things in my wardrobe, and get creative with what and how I wear things. So here are my tips for making the most of what you’ve got and SHOP YOUR OWN WARDROBE!
1. Take stock of what you have
Before you start shopping your own wardrobe, you need to know what you have available to you, so it’s time to get your wardrobe into tip-top shape! Here are some tips from a old blog post on how to get an organised wardrobe quick-smart!
Basically the essence of it is put all the same types of things in the same place – it makes it easy to find stuff.
Here’s some of my wardrobes – all my ‘bottoms’ go together in one wardrobe, from lightweight pants through to jeans, then short skirts through to long skirts. It makes it easier with all the bottom-halves in on spot. That is then carried through to my tops – from singlets on the left, through to cardigans on the right.
2. Stop wearing your ‘go-to’ outfits and try something new
It’s been said before, and I’m going to say it again – women wear approximately 30% of their wardrobe 70% of the time. We have those outfits that we KNOW work, and we tend to stick to them.
Now I’m not saying it’s a bad thing to have those standard ‘go-to’ outfits, (in fact I tell ALL my personal styling clients that they should have at least three ‘go-to’ outfits for every season that they can fall back on when they are having one of THOSE days). BUT you will get a lot more bang for your buck if you can think outside the box every now and then and make the most of what you have. Use your imagination, you can do it!
Try and wear something different EVERYDAY for TWO WEEKS! I know I would struggle with that because I have outfits that I’m comfortable in. In fact, I’m going to set myself a challenge and try and do just that – Follow along with me on Facebook and Instagram and see if I can do it! (I’m also a part of Styling You’s Everyday Style on FB and the ‘gram, read all about how you can play too)
3. Look at things in a different light
Think that black blazer is just for work? Why not wear it with a pretty blouse and jeans on the weekend? Roll the sleeves up for a more casual look.
Or dress down your fancy-pants – I have an obsession with beautiful clothes (duh!) but so many of them are not what you would call ‘every day clothes’. BUT this is a habit you and I both need to get out of, stop saving your ‘good’ clothes for special occasions and make them work in your day-to-day life.
Here is me wearing a gorgeous sequin skirt I bought on sale at Forever New. I had grand plans to wear it ‘one day’ but today, I just wore it like a normal skirt, with a denim shirt and trainers to dress it down and I got a whole new outfit out of clothes I already had in my wardrobe – score!
So there are just a few tips that I’m going to try this year, and hopefully they will help you along the way too! Remember you don’t have to have a million clothes and a gazillion dollars to keep yourself looking stylish and fresh, just a little bit of imagination.
Let me know how you go!
Love & Style Always,
Cait xoxo

Excellent article! I did this a few years ago and realised how much I had by wearing something different for a month. I got away with buying things for my wedding as you need outfits for bridal shower, rehearsal event, honeymoon…
Haha I LOVE the way you think Melissa – “if it’s for the wedding, I can buy it”. I’m TOTALLY stealing that 🙂
This is what I’m talkin’ ’bout! You are speaking my language now babe… I am setting myself a challenge now though to get out of the daily ‘uniform’ and reflecting my personality again in having fun with clothes. Thanks!
