But Cait, they are big and chunky and scary oh my! Well actually, not really – a statement necklace is a great way to add some individuality and style to any simple, classic outfit (or to add some extra POP to a wow outfit too!)

So many of my Style Coaching clients struggle with how to wear a statement necklace, where to get them and how to match them with the clothes the already have, in fact one of my lovely friends and Facebook followers (this is for you Lisa) asked me to write this post explaining all of the above so here it is!

How to wear a statement necklace

Take necklace – put on.

It’s really that easy! It’s supposed to be big, it’s supposed to be obvious, it’s supposed to draw attention – that’s why it’s called a STATEMENT necklace 😉

But really, start simple. Take a plain white tee, or a plain black dress and add something that contrasts against the simple garment you have on, like so…..

This fave of mine is from Forever New (a year or so ago, but they repeat in other colours so keep your eye out!)

The statement necklaces I like the most have a bit more shape to them than just a pedant on a string too. As a gal with a larger-than-the-average-bust, I use statement necklaces to create a more flattering neckline (ie. a v-neck ) when I can’t find them.

But this should apply to everyone, no matter what bust size, look for a necklace that creates interest and detail to the neckline of your clothes

How to match them with your clothes

I like to do one of two things – create a real contrast against what I’m wearing, that is, wear a contrasting colour, or a really bold, strong shape – like so…

Contrast a necklace with a different colour top or dress - like this little beauty from Equip

OR sometimes I like to just add a subtle statement necklace – sounds a little like an oxymoron I know, but it’s doesn’t always have to be BIG AND BOLD. A statement necklace in similar tones to what you are wearing can just add a little texture and interest.

Use a statement necklace to “top and tail”

this is a little stylist’s trick I use to make an outfit look “put together”. Basically you match two of your accessories (morally a necklace and some shoes) in the same colour, everything else doesn’t really matter – the two accessories pull the look together.

Where to get the best statement necklaces

This is something you should NOT spend a lot of money on (in my humble opinion anyway). Statement necklaces are a bit of a trend, and they are not something you wear everyday (like your best gold or silver jewellery) so you don’t need to blow your whole budget on one.

Here are my three top picks where to buy a great statement necklace;

LOVISA | COLETTE by Colette Hayman | EQUIP

All these three stores are in both Aus and NZ, and you’ll pick up a great piece for less that $40 easy!

My BIGGEST TIP?? Don’t get overwhelmed when you go into one of these stores – start with something small that appeals to you and work your way up to the crazy big ones like me. Go for colours and shapes that you like and that you wear, that way you are more likely to wear it!

And let’s face it – the quality is not going to be exceptional but again, they are just a bit of icing on the cake, and if you can get one for $20 and it breaks after 6 months, then that’s pretty much getting what you pay for – SAYING that! I have had some of my “cheap” ones for years and years and they are still going strong.

So I hope that helps take some of the scariness out of chucking on a fun statement necklace! Have you got any tips on where to find some amazing pieces? I’d love for you to share too! Tell us in the comments below
