Ahhh layering. It’s one of those things that ‘fashion-y people’ always tell us we should be doing, and they do amazingly, but somehow, when you try it yourself, it seems harder than it looks.
Am I right?
I’m actually relatively new to layering! I’m originally from Queensland, where we think 24 degrees is a bit nippy, so the need to put more than one layer of clothing on, is a very rare occasion.
But for the last five years, I’ve called NZ my home, and even though I’m another JAFFA (just another f*$king Aucklander for those Aussies reading this), where it doesn’t get that cold, the temps still drop into the single digits occasionally, so I needed to learn to layer.
Layering can be a great way to create some extra drama to any look. Sure, pop on a dress and shoes and you’re done….. OR, add an extra piece, a necklace, scarf or even another layer of clothing and bring your outfit to life!
So here are some quick and simple tips for nailing your layering!
1. Create VERTICAL lines
By adding an open button-up shirt to this look, it gave it a little more interest, added some warmth (the top underneath is a tank) and made the outfit a little more casual.
The necklace added another vertical element (and yes, you can definitely include jewellery in your layers)
Same thing works with a cardigan…
2. Layer your jewellery
Clothing isn’t the only thing you can layer! Use multiple pieces of jewellery to create a more dramatic look, like these stacker rings that the lovely team and Emma & Roe sent to me recently (plus you can get the whole lot for only $225!)
SHOP THE LOT: (top to bottom) Stirling Silver bubble stack ring $39 | Square stacker ring $59 | Plain stirling silver stack ring $39 | Stacker ring with cubic zirconias $59 | Pear shape stirling silver stack ring with blush cubic zirconia $29
One of these delicate rings on its own is pretty, but doesn’t really make much of a statement. Add three or four (or five) together however, and that’s one killer look right?
3. Make your layers look purposeful
Not just like you forgot to tuck your shirt in. If you’re layering a top over pants over a jacket, make the jacket obviously shorter than the top, rather than just a bit shorter, that’s not layering, that’s just messy. Or make the jacket much longer than your top….
4. Lighter fabrics layer better
Nothing like adding extra bulk to your frame by adding layers and layers of thick, stiff fabric right? Think about the weight of the fabrics you are layering, so maybe stick to thinner fabrics underneath if you’re planning on a thicker jacket or vest.
As the weather gets cooler, we’ll start to layer more, so I hope these tips give you a few more ideas on how to nail the layering look!
