I love my Mum, and to be fair, I don’t mind wearing the same things as her (in fact we have done many a clothing swap) but I know that a lot women (no matter what age) end up avoiding certain stores because “that’s where my Mum shops” – and you really should stop doing that, you’re missing out!
Can I let you in on a little secret……. shopping where you “don’t think you should” is one of the easier ways to find things that no one else is wearing!
The trick is to put your own spin on the pieces you get. You might not want to style it head-to-toe like their catalogue.
Here are three such stores, that many girls I know don’t consider shopping in because the store is “too old” for them. I’m here to prove to you they’re not!
Katies
Now this IS a store I grew up with my Mum shopping at, and I totally admit I used to think it was ‘too old’ for me. But as I’ve gotten older, I feel like their branding and target market is getting younger.
They’ve recently recruited some of my favourite Aussie bloggers for their latest campaign, and they girls are looking amazing.
Katies ships to NZ, and the website changes to NZ dollars so you know what you’re in for. Here are a few of my favourite Katies pieces
SHOP THE LOOKS (l-r in Aus $) Off the shoulder maxi dress $69.95 | Wide brim fedora $19.95 + 3/4 print peasant top $49.95 | Ruffle front dress $79.95 | Rouched leg pants $59.95 + cold shoulder top $29.95 + stripe paisley scarf $24.95
It was so hard to choose just these outfits to show you, so make sure you have a good look around the whole site – it’s a treasure-trove of weekend/casual outfits for Spring at a great price.
EziBuy
If you’re a regular reader of the blog, you know that I LOVE EziBuy. So many clothes, so little time.
Lucky they have a couple of stores here in NZ so you can go and look for yourself, but for you Aussies, the website is easy to use (and search on) and their shipping and returns policies makes it low-hassle.
Here are just a couple of the styles that I’m loving right now…..
SHOP THE LOOKS: Next denim shirt $37.50 | Capture cotton stripe espadrilles $49.99 | Capture pocket shirt dress $49.99 | Emerge drape pants $79.99
There really is something for everyone at EziBuy. If you’re on a mission, looking for something specific, don’t discount this online chain, I’m pretty sure you’ll find what ever you are looking for, usually at a really good price too!
Max
I’ve got a great relationship with many of the Max team (I take 100% of my styling clients to Max stores!) and they’ve told me recently that they have just had a bit of a change in the buying team. You can tell!
Everything is a little fresher, younger and lighter (it also helps that Spring is here!) so if you haven’t shopped at Max in a while, maybe it’s time you pay them another visit.
Here are some of my faves atm…..
SHOP THE LOOKS (l-r): Sleeveless shirt dress $139.99 | Off shoulder strip tee $49.99 + ankle crop skinny jeans $79.99 | Chevron beady top $149.99 + Military shorts $79.99
I love, and personally shop at, all three of these brands (I sit somewhere in those mid-30’s just incase you were wondering) and I wouldn’t hesitate to take ANY client there.
Remember, age is just a number, it shouldn’t dictate your style.

I rediscovered Max last year after a friend kindly gave me a voucher. I happily shop there now. But… they still have way too much black! Even their prints are based around black and lots of black in summer too. I’m hoping to see more colour there this season.
Oh nice! Can I let you in on a little secret about Max and black? I have it on good authority that they tried to introduce other colours and prints because people were ‘asking for it’ and then no one bought them, and wanted black! So we all say we don’t want black, but we still buy it 😉
This Summer though they are really heading away from the black, there are heaps more colour options available in store this season, I’ve noticed! Lets hope it stays that way right? 🙂
Hi Cait, as a teenager growing up in NZ in the early 90s, I shopped at Max all the time. The Max then was a cross between Cue & Witchery, and their stores were a different set up to how they are now. You couldn’t get their style in any other stores and were considered an IT store back then that definitely wasn’t Mumsy at all. I left NZ in the late 90s and coming back throughout the years I had noticed how much it had changed its look and style, much to my disappointment. Am glad to see that you post about them and that they appear to be making a comeback!
Hey Helen! I was the opposite but same kinda of story! I visited NZ with my (now) husband a few times and loved Max. Then moved here and thought I’d missed something, but in the last 2 seasons they have TOTALLY lifted their game again!! x
Sussan – I signed up to this emails when I was in Sydney last year and their clothes are amazing. Such a pity they pulled out of NZ a few years back as their clothes are so much better now! They remind me of Country Road but more affordable.
oh tell me about it! Sussan left NZ about 2 weeks after I arrived, it’s always been a fave of mine. They do ship to NZ for free still though!
