I know, the irony of a Queenslander telling you how to get through Winter is not lost on me. But seriously, who else BETTER to work out how to stay toasty-warm, whilst maintaining a sense of style than a Sunshine Stater living in NZ.

But in all seriousness, often when I’m talking to clients here in NZ, they do tell me the really feel the cold! And I’ve come up with a few nifty ways to keep snug-as-a-bug-in-a-rug-with-a-pug (I just added that last bit cause it rhymed…).

Ehm. Anyway, here are my top three fashion life-hacks for surviving Winter.

1. Merino all the way.

But maybe not as you know it. Traditionally, people tend to add big, bulky layers on top of their clothes to keep warm in the winter, but I’ve discovered the best fashion winter life hack of all. A merino camisole. This one in particular if you can get your hands on it…..

merino camis

Kathmandu merino camisoles – onsale with Summit Club for $44.99 (TOTALLY worth it!)

Why is it so great? Its super-fine, the cut is low enough so as not to poke out the top of necklines, and it’s not super long, so you know have to worry about adding extra bulk when you tuck it in. Keeping your core warm is vital if you don’t want to spend your whole winter shivering away, trust me, as a Queenslander, this one little piece of clothing makes Winters here bearable!

2. Tights and leggings are different.

And unless you are wearing court shoes, you should try a footless legging like THESE from Decjuba under your boots.

Decjuba leggings

Decjuba basic seamless leggings normally Aus $29.95 currently on sale for $15!! if you are a size 8-14, go with the S/M, 16 up the M/L will be perfect for you

Being quite tall, I HATE how the crotch of stockings and tights always seem to end up half way to my knees by lunchtime (and that’s on a good day!). The beauty of footless leggings is that you can just tuck them into black socks (preferably merino ones) and pull your boots on and voila! No one will know the difference.

They won’t pull down because they aren’t being pulled over your toes as you go about your day, plus they are WAY thicker than even the thickest denier tights out there.

Add a pair of these leggings, tucked into merino socks, with my fave merino cami and that is my under-layer almost every single day in winter – and I’m toasty warm!

3. Put a hat on.

No really, your face and head are more sensitive to changes in temperature that the rest of your body, so covering them up will make you feel warmer! We often think about hats in summer, but not so much when the temperature drops – so here are some of my Winter picks.

Winter Hats

SHOP THE HATS: Glassons wide brim felt fedora $29.99 | Witchery felt cap $44.90 | Max felt side fedora $59.99

Felt is a great fabric for keeping the heat in, plus the wide brim on these hats will keep the rain off your face on those horrid wet winter days.

Trust me to go for pink! I’ll be doubling up on this Glassons hat in several more colours ready for this winter!

So there are just three little tips from me that hopefully will keep you a wee bit toastier as the mercury drops in your part of the world!

How about you, do you have any other fashion life-hacks for keeping warm in Winter? I’d LOVE to know! Tell me in the comments below
